Pinay Zodiac: Libra/Lakapati
Pinay Zodiac // Created in collaboration with Jodinand Aguillon and shot on location in Manila, PH. Bridging Philippine mythology and Western Astrology, this series re-envisions ancient Filipina goddesses for the modern diaspora.
Lakapati is the great mother goddess of fertile fields, the harvest and prosperity. She is known to be the most compassionate and understanding of the goddesses, represented in imagery as part man and part woman 🙏🏾. Lakapati’s gift to the world is agriculture, her name translated to “Giver of Food.” She is prayed to for the protection of crops and livestock.
In the oldest Tagalog dictionary, Vocabulario de Lengua Tagala (1613), a prayer to her while raising a child high is chanted to bless the fields and ask for her favor:
“Lakapati, pakanin mo yaring alipin mo, huwag mo gutumin.” (Translation: Lakapati, feed this servant who is yours, let them not be hungry).
Her emblem is a single grain of unhusked rice. This simple, yet profound, imagery of Lakapati existing in a single grain of rice is a nod to her domain over fertility, prosperity and gratitude. To be plentiful is the result of an environment in working order to produce the right conditions for growth and fortune. A delicate balance is at play in all aspects of life. Our ancestors asking the favor of the goddess for a bountiful harvest is suggestive of Lakapati’s ability to balance the often chaotic forces within nature and within humankind to support a holistic environment for the growth of abundance and prosperity. Additionally, the harmonizing of the archetypal masculine and feminine suggests the understanding of give and take as a core principle of fertility and harmony.
Libra: A Balancing Act
Libra is the sign of marriage, harmony and balance. Each of these qualities is the result of a working relationship to give and take. As the sun travels through Libra for the next 30 days, it is a time to enjoy the leisure and enjoyment of connection. At the root of connection, we are always in a state of balance - you and I, us and them, client and service provider, protagonist and antagonist. Libras are well regarded for their grace, diplomacy and ability to navigate these multiplicities. They are attuned to balance and know how to curate any situation to make it flow. Within their cool and easygoing nature, there is an immense balancing act going on inside - weighing, considering, calculating - which is where their indecisive quality tends to show up. Balance can be, but is not always, a state of passivity. It takes a lot of work to constantly adjust to changes. Though its external expression is that of grace and ease, Libra is not a passive sign. There tends to be an inner chaos that is constantly sorting and adjusting to maintain a state of balance.
The sun’s movement into Libra on September 23 is the Autumn Equinox - the transition of equal day to night. This shift of seasons brings us all to a place of internal equilibrium. Lakapati and Libra share the quality of harmonizing the multiplicities working all at once to create a flowing environment for connection to thrive.
As the Amazon burns, climate emergency protests roar and we are presented with more than enough indications that our world is out of balance. How do you honor the goddess that gives us so much?
How do you honor the spirits within you, your multiplicities? Where do you feel the urge to strike balance to create an environment for growth and prosperity for all?
